Frank Morris – Studio Holder

Born in 1994 in London, Frank Morris has been an obsessive drawer since a child, but followed his academic interests and studied a BA in American and English Literature at the University of East Anglia and San Francisco State (2015-2019), while at the same time pursuing freelance Illustration. Feeling trapped in a style and meticulous working process that he developed independently, he decided he needed to refresh his relationship to drawing and completed the Drawing Intensive course at the Royal Drawing school in London in 2021.
This experience was greatly liberating for Frank and opened the doors to the free and playful style that characterises his work today. Now based in Bristol, Frank is a participant in this year’s EBC Day School and shares a studio here at St Anne’s House. His current practice merges observational drawing with memory and imagination, driven by an exploration of material, mark making and a love of colour.

Frank is a Bristol-based artist working primarily in drawing. His work emerges through a playful process of intuitive mark-making, collage, and pattern, resulting in rich, colourful compositions, often created on scrap cardboard.
Drawing walks around Bristol form the foundation of his practice, where he makes quick charcoal sketches to capture fleeting moments of interest, later developing them imaginatively in the studio. Recently, poetry has become integral to his process, helping him uncover imagery from his subconscious and forge a deep emotional connection with each piece.
For Frank, drawing is a visual puzzle—both mindful and therapeutic—where instinct and intention merge to shape the final work. frankmorrislondon@gmail.com

Will Wilford – Studio Holder

I am an abstract painter who makes work exploring themes of colour as narrative, singular gestural compositions, and architecture as a painted gesture. You can currently see some of my works on show in Cibomatto Canteen as shown in the images here!
Works are rarely planned; I will start off with a colour interaction or type of mark in mind and then intuitively build up the paintings; with each prior reworking of a painting acting as a prompt for the next. As a result, the finished works are a physical culmination of painterly decisions and the language I have developed.

More recently I been experimenting with the introduction of a sort of negative gesture, where I remove paint but seek for it to function in the same way a regular gestural mark would. This idea of a gesture acting as both a subtraction and addition to the image is a recurring motif, and I like the tension that such a contradiction can add to the work.
